Survey Says: Emissions

Fuel SmartsPhotos 5

HDT's Survey Says reader survey looks at EPA emissions standards, sustainability efforts, and moving to greener truck engines.

Emissions standards from the Environmental Protection Agency and states such as California have pushed truck and engine manufacturers to dramatically reduce pollutants such as NOx and diesel particulates, as well as improving fuel efficiency to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Have you used these advances to help promote the sustainability and environmental friendliness of your company?

The second phase of federal greenhouse gas reduction regulations kick in for the 2021 model year. They require reductions in CO2 emissions and fuel consumption compared to Phase 1 by up to 25% for tractors, up to 24% for vocational vehicles, and up to 16% for heavy-duty pickup trucks and vans. How do you think this will affect the vehicles you can buy?

As some localities push for zero-emission vehicles, battery-electric or hydrogen-fuel-cell power is being presented as a solution for commercial vehicles, ranging from delivery vans to heavy trucks. When do you think those alternative systems will become commercially viable for some applications?

Diesel truck engines designed to meet the ever-stricter NOx and PM standards of the 2000s have a reputation for causing maintenance

headaches. Have engine makers managed to put those problems behind them? Which statement most closely represents your experience?
