Private fleets reported a DOT Recordable crash rate in 2013 of 0.59 crashes per million miles, up slightly from the 0.49 crashes per million miles the previous year and 0.48 crashes in the previous year. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration does not report an industry average crash rate for all motor carriers, but FMCSA does track average recordable truck crash rates for carriers that undergo compliance reviews. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Safety Management Cycle is a safety management model developed by the agency to help motor carriers identify weaknesses that contributed to a specific violation during a roadside inspection or an audit of their records. It outlines six operational areas where fleet safety and compliance breakdowns might occur. They’re intended to be assessed in order, from 1-6. You can use the SMC as a best practice tool before FMCSA ever has a reason to conduct an investigation. Source: FMCSA
In 2012, there were 3,921 people killed and 104,000 people injured in crashes involving large trucks (gross vehicle weight rating greater than 10,000 pounds), a 4% increase from 2011. Texas had the highest percentage of fatal crashes as a percentage of the total for large trucks, and the lowest was a tie between Alaska and Rhode Island at 0.1%. Looking at fatal truck crashes as a percentage of total vehicles, North Dakota was the highest with 20.2% and Massachusetts the lowest at 3.1%. Source: NHTSA
