Recently the National Transportation Safety Board recommended improvements to trailer rear underride guards. This video from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety highlights testing done last year on various trailer underrides, which it said highlighted problems when cars run into the back of a trailer barely overlapping the corner.

Watch what happens when a truck carrying a load of apparently unsecured propane cylinders runs into the back of a bus. Remember, propane in cylinders is stored at fairly high pressure. In the first few seconds of the video, you see the truck passing the car filming the event. There's a bus in the center lane that appears to cut in front of the propane truck, but that's not visible on camera. What happens next is frightening.

David Hoover, director, outbound Logistics for Meijer, is constantly looking for ways to be more efficient, whether it's more fuel-efficient engines or eliminating empty backhauls. Meijer finished converting its 170-truck fleet of regional daycabs to the 2010 engines last fall, enjoying a 5% increase in fuel economy. Last year the fleet started trading some of those in for the latest EPA/NHTSA 2014 engines in the Freightliner Cascadia Evolution. The new trucks are showing a 12% improvement in fuel economy over the ones they replaced. Read more here.
