NY-NJ Ports Pushed to Reinstate Older-Truck Ban

Key New Jersey politicians along with activist groups, including the Teamsters union, on June 16 pushed for launching a more aggressive program to replace older trucks operating at the Port of New York and New Jersey to reduce the impact of air pollution on nearby residents, per a Journal of Commerce news story.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Transportation Security Administration announced some changes to the Transportation Worker Identification Credential card program, used by truckers and other transportation workers to access the nation’s maritime ports.

Carriers Look for HOS Flexibility to Ease Port Congestion

Trucking interests are preparing a request for temporary flexibility in the hours of service rules to help ease the congestion that is plaguing major ports. “We need some relief now,” said Curtis Whalen, executive director of the American Trucking Associations Intermodal Motor Carriers Conference.

GAO Slams Homeland Security Department Over TWIC Card Readers

A new Government Accountability Office report to Congress has some far from kind words about the Transportation Security Administration and biometric readers used in the Transportation Worker Identification Credential program, overseen by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and coordinated along with the U.S. Coast Guard.
