The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is working on an Environmental Impact Statement to analyze the potential environmental impacts of its new fuel efficiency improvement program for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles and work trucks.

The analysis will start with the environmental impacts of the new standards for model-year 2016 vehicles, as well as voluntary compliance standards for model-year 2014 and 2015 vehicles, according to the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association.

The NHTSA issued a notice in the Federal Register seeking comments on the environmental issues and reasonable alternatives. The notice also provides guidance for participating in the scoping process as well as more information about the alternatives the agency will explore. Comments should be submitted by July 14.
