Six trucking companies were honored by CIO magazine in its 2010 CIO 100 list, including Con-way, Old Dominion Freight Line, YRC Worldwide, FedEx, Pitt Ohio Express and Greatwide Logistics Services.
The 23rd annual award program recognizes organizations around the world that exemplify the highest level of operational and strategic excellence in information technology.
Con-way was recognized for its Advanced Business Intelligence Platform, which helps it predict, analyze, manage and automate nearly all of its transportation and logistics business. With the platform, it's been able to analyze inconsistencies in its pricing strategies and replace them, which has attracted new business.
In September 2008, YRC Worldwide kicked off an effort to fully integrate the technology and business operations of Yellow Transportation and Roadway Express. The integration plan revolved around new uses of existing technologies to minimize disruption--for example, rather than build an entirely new customer web site, YRC chose preferred tools from its previous web sites.
Pitt Ohio Express was chosen for its Terminal Performance Initiative, which was developed to improve network speeds and the responsiveness of its business applications, provide better business continuity during power outages and add a voice-over-IP system at its 21 remote locations.
Greatwide Logistics was also recognized for increasing the efficiency of its dispatch process 236 percent by integrating Microsoft's Dynamics CRM with transportation-management software from McLeod. As a result, Greatwide dispatchers spend more time with customers and drivers and less on administrative tasks.
Old Dominion Freight Line needed a faster way to address claims from customers with damaged or lost freight. Its SAP-based Claims Management System enables the company to handle the entire process from the inception of a claim to settlement.
The recipients of this year's CIO 100 award were selected through a three-step process. Companies filled out an online application form detailing their innovative IT and business initiatives, and a team of judges reviewed the applications in depth, looking for unique practices and substantial results. Finally, CIO editors reviewed the judges' recommendations and voted on the final 100.
