Navistar is laying off 275 workers at a Mississippi plant after lowing out on a Pentagon contract to build mine resistant military vehicles.

The U.S. Department of Defense recently tapped Oshkosh Corp. to supply its MRAP All Terrain Vehicles for troops in Afghanistan.

Oshkosh beat out Navistar Defense for the $1.06 billion contract.

According to published reports, the West Point, Miss., plant operates on a project-to-project basis, and the company will continue to look for new vehicle programs for the plant.

The layoff leaves 200 employees at the plant, which recently began production of armored combat vehicles for U.K. military use in Afghanistan, according to Bloomberg. Navistar got that order, valued at $180 million, in April.
