Beginning at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 2 until 10 a.m. Sunday, April 3, the outer loop of the Capital Beltway (I-495 East), just past the I-95 South exit will be closed
while Springfield Interchange crews hoist steel beams over I-495 East.
Capital Beltway eastbound motorists heading towards the Woodrow Wilson Bridge or heading to I-395 northbound will be detoured onto I-95 South and exit at Exit 166A, (Fairfax County Parkway/ Newington/Ft. Belvoir) to head back to I-95 North, I-395 North and I-495 East. The 10-mile detour could add about 30 minutes to motorists’ trips.
In addition, I-395 southbound motorists heading to I-495 East/I-95 North/Woodrow Wilson Bridge will experience delays of up to 20 minutes while all lanes periodically shut down for the steel work.
I-495 East motorists entering the night work zone area will move from four lanes down to two right lanes on the Beltway in the Braddock Road exit area all the way to the I-95 South exit.
To reduce traffic on I-395/95 South, due to the detour off the Beltway, the HOV lanes (southbound) will be opened through the duration of the work hours.
A map of the detour will be posted on the project Web site, www.springfieldinterchange.com, on March 28.
