Sterling Truck Corp. and Western Star Trucks announced they are moving headquarters from Willoughby, Ohio, outside Cleveland
, to Redford, Mich., in the Greater Detroit area. Both companies are units of the Freightliner LLC Group. Freightliner is a company of DaimlerChrysler.
In simultaneous but separate announcements, Sterling and Western Star said their respective sales, marketing, dealer operations, and financial departments will begin operating from the new facility in the second quarter of this year.
Bloomberg reports that DaimlerChrysler is investing $275 million to expand the Redford manufacturing and office complex. The project includes new offices. The 3.2 million-square-foot Redford complex opened in 1938 and now has about 2,800 workers. DaimlerChrysler didn't say how many new jobs would be added as the expansion is completed.
John Merrifield, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Sterling and Western Star said the transition will be seamless to operations and transparent to its customers.
Manufacturing operations for Sterling trucks remain in St. Thomas, Ont., Canada. The St. Thomas Truck Manufacturing Plant employs over 2,100 people in the production of Sterling-brand heavy- and medium-duty vehicles.
Western Star trucks will continue to be built at the Portland, Ore., Truck Manufacturing Plant. The Portland plant employs 1,800 people in the production of a range of heavy-duty commercial vehicles including the entire Western Star product line.
