The Associated Press reports that Minnesota has found a replacement for the traditional grooves
that help reduce skids on concrete highways: AstroTurf.
Workers drag the plastic grass over a fresh highway surface to rough it up. According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation, the texture is quieter to drive on than the grooves and just as safe.
The Federal Highway Administration said Minnesota is the first state to eliminate the old-fashioned grooves in favor of using AstroTurf.
