SkyBitz, a provider of satellite-based communications and tracking services for transportation equipment, has announced that Landstar System Inc., a non-asset based transportation capacity provider,
has selected SkyBitz's GLS Services for its trailer tracking.
Landstar, based in Jacksonville, Fla., has ordered SkyBitz Mobile Terminals for retrofit installations, and has specified the SkyBitz terminals on some of its new trailers being built and delivered during the first half of 2003.
SkyBitz's GLS is a global, satellite-based tracking and monitoring service that has initially been launched in the North American commercial freight transportation market. According to SkyBitz, this wireless technology surpasses Global Positioning System (GPS) technology, bringing dramatic improvements in cost, coverage, power consumption and ease of installation.
GLS was designed from the ground up to serve the transportation industry, and will be used on truck trailers, rail cars and cargo containers to pinpoint the location of both tethered and un-tethered assets.
"The Landstar management team has closely followed the development of trailer tracking and monitoring technology over the years. We are pleased that their review and testing of the SkyBitz Mobile Terminal and GLS Service has resulted in their decision for implementation," said Andy Wood, SkyBitz's CEO. "We are proud to be working with Landstar and look forward to becoming an integral part of their fleet management program."
Headquartered in Dulles, Va., SkyBitz is a privately held company backed by AIG Highstar Capital and Industrial Technology Ventures. For additional information, visit www.skybitz.com .
