Jubitz Corp. in Portland, Ore., is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
What began as a small truck leasing business in 1952 has grown into a major travel center, located just east of I-5 at exit 307 near the Oregon/Washington border. In an era of multi-location chains and franchises, Jubitz remains a single-location, family-owned business. It is headed by the two sons of Monroe “Moe” Jubitz, who founded the company.
Today, Jubitz Travel Center features 26 diesel and eight gasoline fueling pumps, a 100-room hotel, a full-service restaurant, a lounge featuring live country music nightly, a movie theater, a gift shop, a delicatessen, convenience store, barbershop/hair salon and laundromat. There’s also a tire sales and retreading facility, business lounge, medical clinic, chiropractor, truck wash, scale, showers and jacuzzi, and boot repair shop catering to professional truckers.
“The success and longevity of Jubitz can be traced to our dad’s unending commitment to customer service,” says Jubitz Corp. co-president Fred Jubitz, who started working at the truckstop washing trucks when he was 12 years old. “Dad did his own market research. He asked customers what they needed and added services that met those needs.”
Two years ago, Jubitz completed a multi-million-dollar renovation and expansion that doubled the capacity of its Portlander Inn, added a banquet facility and additional seating to its Cascade Grill restaurant, added a second dance floor to the Ponderosa Lounge, and created a retail mini-mall with an 80-seat movie theater.
