Truck drivers experience the most work-related injuries and illnesses that force them to take time off from work.

The Labor Department announced the latest statistics, for the year 2000, noting that overall, the 1.7 million injuries and illnesses at private companies that required time off in 2000 was about the same number as the previous year.
Truckers, however, reported 141,000 injuries in 2000, up from 131,800 in 1999. They missed a median nine days of work. Although truckers topped the list, they were followed closely by electricians, then by construction workers, carpenters, plumbers and pipe fitters.
The body part most affected in workplace injuries was the trunk, including the back.
