XM Satellite Radio and Sirius Satellite Radio are concerned that a certain kind of wireless technology could interfere with their signals.

According to the Washington Post, wireless fidelity, or "wi-fi," provides wireless Internet connections for laptop computers and personal digital assistants, such as Palm Pilots. Most manufacturers of the technology use part of the radio spectrum that is close to the part used by the satellite radio networks. As the fast-growing technology proliferates, the two companies say it could cause interference.
Sirius and XM have asked the Federal Communications Commission to force wi-fi providers to lower their power output or add filtering equipment, reports the Post. Wi-fi manufacturers say the proposal would raise their costs by 25 to 30 percent, and ask why XM and Sirius didn't think about the possible interference when they were developing their satellite networks.
