Michigan Gov. John Engler wants to raise diesel fuel taxes 4 cents per gallon as part of the fiscal 2003 budget he proposed last week.

The budget would increase the state's diesel tax to 19 cents a gallon, the same rate as the gasoline tax.
"I'm glad they're asking truckers to step up to the plate and pay their fair share," said Rep. Keith Stallworth of Detroit, reported the Associated Press.
Trucking companies, however, say they pay other fees and taxes that most motorists don't pay, so they shouldn't be expected to pay the same amount of fuel tax.
The extra money would be spent to repair highways and bridges. Engler estimates the measure would raise an extra $46 million in 2003, $65.9 million more in 2004 and $90.2 million more in 2005.
