2002 will find all North American Class 8 and Medium Duty vehicle manufacturers listing the Eaton VORAD EVT-300 Collision Warning System as a production option on new tractors and straight trucks.

Some of the OEMs also offer EVT-300 with SmartCruise adaptive cruise control system.
Eaton VORAD (Vehicle On-board RADar) Collision Warning Systems warns of potential hazards ahead like a stopped or slow-moving vehicle, in all types of weather and traffic conditions. Drivers can take evasive action before an accident happens. It also lets drivers know when they're following too close.
The EVT-300 features front and side radar sensors, with visual and audible warnings regarding potential hazards in front of the truck and to its side. The sophisticated software, first introduced in fighter jets, tracks up to 20 potential hazards in the truck's intended path. It ignores non-threatening objects and vehicles in other lanes, and even tracks hazards around curves in the road.
SmartCruise is available as an original equipment option with the EVT-300 CWS. When the vehicle's cruise control is activated or engaged, SmartCruise automatically maintains a driver pre-set speed or following interval to vehicles ahead of the truck. When that pre-set following time drops below its pre-set parameter, SmartCruise reduces engine speed in one or more of three ways: by de-fueling the engine, by engaging the engine brake, and by allowing an automated transmission to downshift. If the vehicle ahead widens the gap once more, SmartCruise resumes the previous pre-set speed. Yet the driver remains in control, able to override any operation at any time.
Current customers, such as U.S. Xpress, Landstar, Penske Logistics and Averitt Express, have realized accident reduction rates of 35 percent to 100 percent with the collision warning system, according to the company.
