A downturn in the truck tire market has forced Michelin North America to cut 2,000 jobs, about 7 percent of its workforce.

According to published reports, all 23 of Michelin's plants in North America will be affected. The company hopes to achieve most of the downsizing through normal attrition and voluntary layoffs.
Although Michelin's car and light truck tire sales were boosted last year by the demand for replacements for recalled Bridgestone/Firestone tires blamed for blowouts on Ford Explorers, the slump in truck sales and higher costs for raw materials more than offset that.
