Vancouver, Wash., has proposed to ban unmuffled compression brakes inside the city limits.
While new vehicles must comply with federal noise pollution regulations, city officials say older trucks and those modified by drivers who like the sound of a Jake Brake may not.
The proposed ordinance would allow drivers accused of violating it to defend themselves by showing that the compression brakes were used during an emergency to protect people or property.
A public hearing on the proposed ordinance will be held during the city council's Sept. 4 meeting.
