Freightliner has cut 123 jobs at its truck parts plant in Gastonia, N.C.

The plant serves Freightliner's assembly plants in Mount Holly and Cleveland. Both those plants have cut production recently, resulting in less demand for the parts produced in Gastonia. For instance, at Freightliner's Mount Holly, N.C., plant, 475 of the plant's 1,500 employees were laid off in July as production of Freightliner's Business Class trucks built there will dropped from 96 to 65 trucks a day.
Freightliner Spokesman Chris Brandt said the cuts are the result of the continuing sluggish sales for heavy-duty trucks. "We regret this was necessary, but the economic slowdown is affecting us all," he said.
Industry observers believe more cuts are possible as Freightliner implements a turnaround plan this fall.
