More than one-third of the commercial trucks inspected Tuesday near Devine, Texas, as part of Roadcheck 2001 were found to be unsafe.

According to the San Antonio Express-News, of 37 trucks inspected at a weigh station, 14 were removed from service. Bad brakes often were the culprit. Faulty warning systems for brakes and inadequate load securements also were cited. Additionally, six drivers were cited for hours-of-service violations or improper logs. All in all, officers issued 31 tickets and 86 warnings during a six-hour period.
Last year’s three-day Roadcheck resulted in more than 10,000 vehicles being removed from the roads in the United States, Mexico and Canada because of safety violations.
