The nation sorely needs “creative answers” to improve highway productivity.
That was the message of Gary Petty, new president and CEO of the National Private Truck Council, speaking at the Council’s annual meeting in Nashville earlier this week.
He noted that with virtually no new major highway construction, especially in urban areas, perhaps it’s time for the trucking community in partnership with government officials to find creative answers to today’s problems. He suggested that perhaps public policy should address the feasibility of creating dedicated truck lanes (like passenger car HOV lanes) in urban areas with heavy truck traffic.
Petty said the NPTC board of directors is working on a three-year strategic plan which might include strategic alliances with other trucking-related associations where there are common goals. Financially, he said NPTC is within budget, and that the Council is working on a “strong marketing message” to attract more members of the private trucking community. The Council currently has about 1,000 members and would like to double that.
