San Francisco-based Cotelligent Inc., an information technology company, announced that its JASware middleware was part of the mobile computing system designed by Symbol Technologies for consumer goods distributor McLane Company.
McLane hauls food, tobacco, general merchandise, and toys to Wal-Mart stores, convenience stores (including 7-Eleven), theaters, drugstores and some 20,000 restaurants from 17 national distribution centers with a fleet of 1,050 trucks.
Symbol Technologies of Holtsville, N.Y., designed the system to enable data exchange between an onboard transceiver and a driver outside the vehicle. The system can also transmit and receive data from anywhere on the road so that a truck's contents and exact whereabouts can be immediately traced.
“This project, which will migrate our operations to a paperless process, gives our customers streamlined delivery that will help them enhance productivity and customer service," said David Dillon, McLane’s Manager of Transportation.
The project, built around the Symbol SPT 1740 handheld computer, was developed and managed in partnership with Cotelligent, Qualcomm, IBM and XATA Corp. of Burnsville, Minn., a provider of mobile communication and operations systems for the private fleet sector.
