Mack Trucks is laying off more than 700 workers in three states

About 300 of the 940 people who work at the Mack plant in Macungie, Pa., will be laid off by July 27, according to published reports. Production will be gradually reduced to a rate of 45 trucks per day from the current 62.
The plant in Winnsboro, S.C., will see job cuts of 135 people as it cuts production from 72 trucks to 63 trucks per day starting April 9. The plant made 106 trucks per day in 1999. Mack ended its second shift and cut 300 jobs at the plant less than a year ago.
Mack will also lay off 150 workers at its Hagerstown, Md., engine plant. On April 9, the plant will drop daily production from 186 engines to 165, and from 39 transmissions a day to 23. Mack cut 60 jobs at the plant last August.
