Westport Innovations has signed a technology development agreement with Isuzu Motors Ltd. of Tokyo, Japan, to create a high-efficiency low-emissions natural gas fuel system for Isuzu engines.

Westport will design a fuel injector, natural gas fuel supply system and electronic engine control system for Isuzu diesel engines used in commercial trucks from 3.5 to 8 tons. Westport will also create prototypes and test the components. The Vancouver, B.C., based company will retain intellectual property rights. Isuzu, which is 49% owned by General Motors, will provide engineering support and equipment. It has the option to enter into a volume production agreement at any time.
Westport has several other joint development projects in the works, including development of natural gas fueled heavy duty diesel engines with Cummins, a heavy duty natural gas fuel system with Germany’s MAN, and natural gas fueled light duty diesels with Ford Motor Co.
