Larry Springer, a Texas-based line-haul driver for Central Freight Lines Inc., has been named the American Trucking Associations’ (ATA) 2005 National Truck Driver of the Year.
CFL Driver Named ATA’s Driver of the Year

Springer, of Holland, Texas, scored more than four million accident-free miles in his 32 years on the road. He competed for the national title against professionals nominated by state trucking associations. The honor, sponsored by Custard Insurance Adjusters, is considered among the highest a commercial truck driver can receive.
Springer will be recognized at ATA’s 2005 Safety and Loss Prevention Management Council’s Fall Conference in Miami, Fla., Oct. 7 and again on Oct. 17 at the ATA Management Conference and Exhibition in Boston.
In nominating Springer, the Texas Motor Transportation Association said, “As far as safety is concerned, 32 years and four million safe driving miles speak volumes about Mr. Springer and his commitment to not only Central Freight Lines but the motoring public as well.” TMTA also said Springer promotes the trucking industry and advances its public perception through television, radio and public appearances.
Springer has been an America’s Road Team Captain (1994), and has acted as a Central Freight Lines Designated Driver Instructor. He also served as ATA’s driver representative who worked with former Secretary of Transportation Rodney Slater during the kick-off of the Department of Transportation’s “No Zone” program.
“The trucking industry is proud of professionals like Larry Springer who work hard every day to deliver what America needs – safely, efficiently, and on time,” said ATA President and CEO Bill Graves.
