Finding a qualified medical professional to perform DOT medical exams just got easier. The National Academy of DOT Medical Examiners has launched the first national online registry of NADME certified DOT medical examiners.
Legislation pending in Congress would require such a registry. In addition, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has proposed the need for a registry that would list certified medical examiners who are available to examine truck and motor coach drivers and effectively determine their physical qualifications to operate commercial motor vehicles. According to FMCSA, the primary mission of such a registry will be “to improve highway safety by producing trained, certified medical examiners who can effectively determine if a commercial motor vehicle operator’s health meets Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration standards.”
However, FMCSA has also said that the target date for FMCSA to implement such a registry is not anticipated to occur until 2009
With the launch of NADME’s national registry, there will be no need to wait until 2009, the academy says. Neither will there be a need for FMCSA to establish a government-run registry. Instead, trucking companies, private carriers, motorcoach operators and drivers can now begin to access NADME’s national registry and find a database of those particular medical professionals whom the public can be assured meet FMCSA’s stated objectives and criteria. Moreover, since the registry’s launch, medical examiners around the country have begun taking the initiative to be certified and are now listed on NADME’s registry.
"There is no higher level of professionalism or certification being offered to certify medical professionals than the NADME designation," said NADME board member Jeffrey Liva, M.D., especially because NADME’s training is accredited by Mt. Sinai Medical School.”
