Although anecdotal evidence may suggest that women have caught up with, or possibly surpassed, men where dangerous driving is concerned, a new study makes it clear that, when it comes to behaving dumbly on the road, men win.
According to a national survey conducted by Response Insurance, 87 percent of drivers admit to breaking the rules of the road and driving in an unsafe manner. Though male drivers are more likely than women to break the rules in virtually every category, speeding is where men really leave women in the dust.
According to the survey, 58 percent of men say they exceed the speed limit "when others are doing it" vs. 48 percent of women. Men are also more likely to use improper escape routes to avoid traffic by a margin of 16 percent to 11 percent. Men are more likely to flash their headlights to warn oncoming traffic of police radar traps (27 percent vs. 18 percent) and, when caught, men are more likely to try talking their way out of a ticket (16 percent vs. 11 percent).
