U.S. Congressman Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) is vowing to fight the implementation of North American Free Trade Agreement provisions allowing Mexican trucks on U.S. highways, and has introduced legislation supporting U.S. safety standards for Mexican trucks crossing the U.S. border.

"The U.S. Department of Transportation found that 44% of Mexican trucks trying to enter the United States are turned away because of significant safety hazards," said Brown. "We cannot allow NAFTA to open our borders and roll over the public safety laws that keep American families safe."
Brown’s legislation would call on the United States to refuse Mexican trucks access to U.S. roads, regardless of the NAFTA dispute ruling, until the DOT Inspector General has certified that Mexican trucks and drivers are complying with safety, environmental, and driver competency standards in effect in the U.S.
