Knight Transportation, Phoenix, Ariz., announced quarterly record net earnings of $14.6 million, or 25 cents per share, including fuel surcharges, compared with $10 million or 17 cents a share a year ago.
Underlying the gains was revenue totaling $126.8 million, including fuel surcharges, up from $90.1 million a year ago.
Knight added 77 tractor to its fleet this past quarter. The company fleet, including owner-operated tractors, totaled 2,818 on Dec. 31, up 400 from late 2003.
Knight reported a 17 percent increase in revenue per tractor from a year ago, while over the same period its tractors logged on average 2.3 percent more miles and the distance traveled on each freight haul rose 6.7 percent.
