University of Tennessee Confirms 6% Fuel Savings for SmartTruck

MATS, LOUISVILLE, KY, -- A recent tractor-trailer aerodynamic study conducted by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s National Center for Computational Engineering showed SmartTruck’s base-trailer aerodynamics system significantly reduces drag, translating into highway fuel savings of approximately 6%.

In additional testing using computational fluid dynamics conducted by CD-adapco and released in October 2013, SmartTruck's base UnderTray product was shown to reduce drag, producing highway fuel savings of approximately 7%.

Both UT-C and CD-adapco are recognized as leaders in the aero testing and evaluation fields.

“SmartTruck has contended for several years that the trucking industry has the opportunity to better understand the intricacies of aerodynamic testing and the need for a variety of test methods to guarantee accurate results that will coincide to real-world applications,” said Henderson. “Our belief is being borne out by recent movements by the EPA to include a broader palette of testing methods for verifying products under the SmartWay program—methods that include SAE J1321, wind tunnel testing, CFD and coastdown testing.”

SmartTruck has also contracted an additional world-renowned, third-party testing organization to conduct SAE J1321 testing on its products to further confirm the company’s product performance. Testing is scheduled to take place in the coming months.

    It is unclear to me but the was all computer based? Let's have Smartruck explain to us why my Chevy Cobalt dos not get the same mileage as what Chevy said it would on the window sticker. Then, lets have them explain why their device really will give me the numbers they publish--even in the real world. Good testing is part of good science. It will give either repeatable or inconclusive results. Until Smartuck can tell us what is wrong with the J1321 test process so we can fix it, SmartPeople are going to tend to assume that their devices do not work as they claim. Their cozy relationship with SmartWay further clouds how the entire testing process is supposed to work.

    I don't know where you get your information about Smart Truck you think using some car example in dealing in truck matters is smart. Let me tell you what is smart, I have drove a truck for 33 years with over three million safe driving miles, just to establish my experience. I have used Smart Truck Systems for the last year a d seen a solid 4 tenths gain in MPG now regardless to your half witted opinions I have been buying my own fuel for the past 27 years of my career so I believe my opinion would be much more accurate than yours

    I have been using the base smart truck system for about 1 1/2 years now. At this point I will never a trailer without it. Hoping to up grade to the full system real soon. I believe in the smart truck system. Last year I was pushing 8 miles to the gallon then dropped down to 6.5 while pulling ups trailers during the holiday season. I will never do that again it cost me money that I can't get back. Hoping to join the smart truck road team

    To anyone who doubts the performance of the Smart Truck system I can tell you from experience I have received a 4 percent gain in mpg over my trailers with skirts. All my new trailers have the complete system and my results are better than an 8 % gain over a trailer with no improvements. The trailers I have with skirts will be changed over to the Smart Truck system. Drive in the snow all day with skirts and the rear of your trailer will be covered in snow....not so with the under tray and defuser you will never have to clean your lights off again because there is no (vacuum) behind the trailer thus proving it reduces the aero dynamic drag at the rear of the trailer as well as the gains received by moving the air under the tandems. GREAT PRO DUCT
