Cellport has introduced MobileWeb, a $695 box that connects to a vehicle’s electrical wiring to collect information about its health such as oil level and vehicle location.
The box collects the information in HyperText Markup Language (HTML) and sends it to the Internet and posts it on a fleet’s web site, maker says. The unit, which has its own Internet Protocol address, also allows drivers to send and receive e-mail.
Cellport has distributed 20 development kits in the past three months to third-party application developers and companies creating applications for their own internal use. The U.S. Postal Service, for example, is interested in developing an application to track postal trucks, which have a high incidence of hijacking.
