Newport's annual Truckerfest trucker appreciation event continues through 1 p.m. Sunday at The Alamo travel center in Reno/Sparks, Nev., with trucker games, the "Best Buddy" pet contest and a spectacular fireworks show.

The festivities kicked off Thursday night with the Parade of Pride through downtown Reno, then started in earnest Friday as a record number of exhibitors showed and sold everything from popcorn and books on cassette to trucks, engines and oil to signing up drivers for new job opportunities.
Some truckers got "all wet" playing Newport's Trucker Games - a water balloon toss and musical hay bales (pictured), refereed by Newport's David Kolman with prizes for both participants and winners from various exhibitors. Free steak dinners were on the grill for commercial drivers and their families.
Friday night wrapped up with a concert by Neal McCoy and Collin Raye, held across the street from the Alamo under the stars. While the general public could buy tickets, CDL holders and their families got in for free.
Saturday, judging takes place for the truck beauty show contest, the first in the Stars & Stripes show truck series, sponsored by Freightliner & Chevron. This qualifying show is sponsored by Cummins. Winners will be announced Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
In addition to more Trucker Games, Saturday afternoon features the Best Buddy Pet Contest, sponsored by Mack. There will be more live entertainment from 6 p.m.-8 p.m., when the NAST show truck light show begins. At 9 p.m., the Zambelli Fireworks Extravaganza, sponsored by Caterpillar and Peterbilt, will light up the sky.
Truckerfest 2000 will wrap up Sunday from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. For more information, visit www.truckerfest.com.
