April 07, 2000
Con-Way Southern Express, a division of Con-Way Transportation Services, Ann Arbor, MI, is replacing its Richmond facility with a new freight assembly center in Chester, VA. Construction is expected to be completed in November.
The new facility is expected to be a key transfer point for freight moving to cities along the mid-Atlantic seaboard. The fleet hopes to reduce transit times from two days to one day between major markets in North Carolina and northern markets in eastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and all of Maryland and Delaware.
Construction will include 38,220 square feet of space for 100 loading dock doors and capacity for 50 more. A maintenance shop and fueling area will occupy 22,132 square feet and 8,000 square feet of offices are also planned. When constructed, the new facility will have a daily
freight-handling capacity of 2 million pounds.
