U.S. heavy truck sales for the first four months of the year were more than 27% higher than the same time last year, putting us well on the way to another record-breaking year.

According to Ward's Communications, April Class 8 sales were 24,332, nearly 32% higher than April 1998. So far this year, truck makers have sold 80,916 heavy trucks. If sales continue at their current clip, 1999 figures will top 240,000 - well above last year's record high of 209,483.
DaimlerChrysler, parent company of Freightliner and Sterling, leads the pack for the year with 30,025 Class 8 trucks sold in the first four months. They're followed by Paccar (Kenworth and Peterbilt) with 16,855, then by Navistar with 14,766.
