Alcoa has launched a new online tool for comparing financial data for steel and aluminum wheel alternatives
. Using CalcuLighter, visitors can weigh data between steel duals and aluminum duals or wide-base wheels, or aluminum duals compared to wide-base.

"Especially during tight economic times, fleets and owner-operators need actionable, dollars-and-cents answers now, and seat-of-the-pants guesstimates won't do," said Tim Myers, president of Alcoa Wheel and Transportation Products. "Using the online CalcuLighter, they can see real-world data in real time, based on their own truck and trailer profile. This tool effectively translates basic product differences into a relevant, return on investment summary."

Users fill in their fleet profile on Alcoa's web site and choose the wheel alternative they wish to compare. They also can enter a few specifics about their needs. CalcuLighter then calculates the results, which appear on the screen. The results will include fuel, payload and tire life data, as well as Truck Blue Book trade-in value, scrap value, relative wheel maintenance information and the difference between each product's carbon footprint. The calculator will also provide the cost of an Alcoa wheel upgrade.

"CalcuLighter spells out these figures instantly as specific fleet input is entered," Myers said. "Owners can compare a variety of different options in only a few minutes."
