As expected from the preliminary report, August was a good month for Classes 5-8 orders. However, the absence of sustained economic strength remains a limitation for Class 8 demand, and build expectations have been sharply curtailed over the past two months.

August Preliminary Net Orders Up for Class 8 and Classes 5-7

August saw Class 8 orders rise to their highest level in three months with a preliminary reading of 19,500 units (+20%y/y). The August seasonal factor is the third lowest in 2013. When applied, August’s seasonally adjusted Class 8 order total rises to 22,000 units. The August SA reading represents the third best order month in the past 20.

Preliminary Class 8 Orders for January Show Improvement

FTR Associates has released preliminary data showing January Class 8 truck net orders at 22,235, 7% higher than December but down 11% year-over-year. Orders for Class 8 vehicles have been above the 20,000 mark for the past four months, showing some strength after a soft period mid-year 2012.
