Blumenauer to Propose Diesel and Gasoline Tax Hikes

Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore., will introduce bills to raise federal fuel taxes, index them to inflation and test a vehicle-mile tax. The proposals, which Blumenauer is scheduled to discuss on Capitol Hill Wednesday, come as Congress begins to consider ways to revive funding for U.S. roads and bridges.

Rep. Bill Shuster, R-Pa., chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, talks to the press about the results of the bipartisan panel's study of freight transport.

A congressional panel is recommending a comprehensive, multimodal approach to freight transportation with robust, sustainable funding from public and private sources. The bipartisan Panel on 21st Century Freight Transportation unanimously backs more spending on freight infrastructure – but does not take a position on where the money should come from.

Obama Proposes Tax Reform to Raise Money for Highway and Other Investments

President Obama proposed a tax reform deal that would include a big, one-time investment in infrastructure. In remarks Tuesday at an Amazon Fulfillment Center in Chattanooga, Tenn., Obama said he would support lowering the corporate tax rate from 35% to 28%, and to 25% for manufacturers.

New GAO Report Shows High Number of Bridges are in “Poor Condition”

A new report says despite some improvements in the past decade, a substantial number of U.S. bridges are still in poor condition. The report from the Government Accountability Office was in response to the May collapse of a bridge along Interstate 5 in Washington state.

The Senate Commerce Committee Monday night approved the nomination of Anthony Foxx to be Secretary of Transportation, while the committee named Mark Warner to take over a key transportation subcommittee from the late Frank Lautenberg.

Vermont Considering Tax Hikes for Diesel and Gasoline

As lawmakers in Vermont look to raise money for road and other transportation projects, trucking could get dragged into the mix with talk of a possible diesel tax hike. One proposal in the state legislature calls for increasing the diesel tax by 2 cents per gallon this year followed by a 2-cent hike in 2014.

Highway Gridlock Grows Worse

A new report says gridlock in the U.S. has staged a dramatic comeback after two years of post-recession lows, but it’s also a sign the economy is bouncing back. Data from the most recent Inrix Gridlock Index shows traffic jumped by almost 10% during February – the largest year-over-year increase recorded in two years, and a healthy sign of rising economic activity across 100 metro areas.

The American Society of Civil Engineers says the state of America's infrastructure rose slightly, going from a D in 2009 to a D+ in its 2013 Report Card for America's Infrastructure, and projected a $1.5 trillion funding shortfall by 2020 based on current funding levels.

Maryland Gov. Fuel Tax Plan Similar to Virginia's

Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley has borrowed a page from Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell’s playbook, with proposed changes to the state’s tax on gasoline to raise highway funds. According to published reports there is no indication that it would affect the diesel fuel tax.
