Trucking company parent Con-way Inc. has reported 2014 first quarter net income of $12.9 million, or 22 cents per diluted share, compared to first quarter 2013 net income of $14 million, or 25 cents per diluted share, a 7.9% decline.

Recruiting and retention. It’s akin to bailing water out of a boat that has a hole in it. You really have to plug the hole first, otherwise you’re constantly fighting to stay afloat. In the trucking industry, that hole is driver retention.

Truck driver Robert Woolf of Leland, N.C., has been named a Highway Angel by the Truckload Carriers Association. Woolf, who drives for Con-way Truckload of Joplin, Mo., is being recognized for helping a man who had suffered possible spinal injuries.
