Daimler Trucks North America announced at CES in Las Vegas that it’s now offering what it says is the first Level 2 automated truck in series production in North America with the latest enhancements to the Freightliner new Cascadia. Level 2 automation means the truck is capable of both lateral (steering) and longitudinal (acceleration/deceleration) control.

When Daimler Trucks revealed to the world the first truly autonomous on-highway truck, it was digitally camouflaged to prevent anyone, including competitors, from getting a close look at it. In Hanover, Germany, the day before the official opening of the 2014 International Commercial Vehicle show (IAA), Daimler took the wraps of the truck and showed the worlds its vision of the future.

The 5700XE boasts a very fuel efficient powertrain as well as some groundbreaking aero treatment that Western Star says will give any aero truck on the road today a real run for its money. Three years in the making, Western Star launched the 5700XE in Las Vegas.

As interest in natural gas power broadens, Freightliner is adding options that appeal to fleets wanting greater range and fuel savings technologies. The company plans to increase the operating range of some natural-gas-fueled trucks out to 800 miles.
