Hegemon Electronics recently added its PLC4TRUCKS system to more than 10,000 J. B. Hunt Transport Services tractors. The solution integrates with J. B. Hunt's trailer-tracking solution and provides both real-time monitoring
of tractor/trailer connections and improved accuracy in trailer asset management.
PLC4TRUCKS transmits a programmable, digital ID number at regular intervals. This signal is transmitted between the tractor and the trailer using the existing seven-pin wiring harness as the pathway. The signal is read by the trailer-tracking unit and records the connection between tractor and trailer. This connection is then included as part of the data transmission from the trailer.
"The addition of this system is part of J.B. Hunt's strategy to improve asset management and efficiency," said Cecilia Gann, vice president of marketing for J.B. Hunt. "One goal is to automate tractor-trailer connections to reduce human error and increase data accuracy. We have found this to be a cost-effective way of monitoring the 'who and when' of movement within our
trailer fleet."
Hegemon Electronics Inc. manufactures Power Line Carrier (PLC) products for the transportation industry, allowing integration of reliable tractor-trailer bi-directional digital communications into existing trailer tracking and asset management systems.
