The 25th "Chrome" Anniversary Walcott Truckers Jamboree, held July 8-9, was the biggest, featuring more than 180 exhibits, a Super Truck Beauty Contest with 87 trucks competing,
an antique truck display with 250 vehicles, pork chop cookout, pet contest and Trucker Olympics.
In addition, there was a giant anniversary cake that served 5,000 slices, carnival games and a Ferris wheel, two live bands, a Colgate Country Showdown music competition and a book signing by Kathy L’Amour, widow of western author Louis L’Amour.
"We are very proud after 25 years to be celebrating America’s truckers on such a grand scale," said Delia Moon Meier, Iowa 80 Truckstop senior vice president. "Professional drivers are the backbone of this country, moving goods wherever we need them. We appreciate them and this is our way of saying thank you."
The Walcott Truckers Jamboree began in 1979 featuring a few exhibits, live music, food and a small display of antique trucks. That first Jamboree only attracted a few hundred drivers, a far cry from the 30,000 that attended last week’s event.
Next year’s 26th annual Walcott Truckers Jamboree is scheduled for Thursday and Friday July 14 and 15, in Walcott, Iowa.
