International Truck & Engine Corp. says it plans to lay off 250 workers in January and reduce its production of new trucks due to declining demand.

About 2,000 workers are currently employed at the Springfield, Ohio, plant, and most of those affected by the layoffs will leave Jan. 3.
An International Truck spokesman said the plant will produce 143 medium-duty trucks a day, down from the current 162 trucks.
United Auto Workers Local 402 estimates 209 of its production workers will be laid off. The rest will come from UAW Local 658, which covers clerical and technical workers.
International Truck is a subsidiary of Navistar Corp.
