Savi Technology, Sunnyvale, Calif., has introduced Savi Transportation Security software, an application that monitors and manages the security of containers as they pass through global transportation portals.
According to Savi, the software is designed to work with the company's SmartSeal family of electronic seals, and with UDAP, Savi's open communications protocol that enables interoperability with various data collection systems including barcode, GPS and other hardware-based systems.
Last year Savi introduced its SmartSeal electronic seals for cargo containers. The premier model is designed for use with standard intermodal containers, rail cars, and trailers. A newer SmartSeal based on fiber-optic cable is suited for non-standard cargo containers such as Unit Load Devices (ULDs) used to containerize air cargo. The seals are based on EchoPoint RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) and are designed for both single-use and reusable deployments.
Savi's UDAP provides a software translator that enables interoperable "plug and play" functions between the Savi devices and applications and various data collection hardware, such as bar code scanners, biometric devices, GPS-based systems, and other systems. Information captured by these different technologies can be automatically aggregated and leveraged by Savi security solutions. Savi UDAP Partnership Program is an open program that licenses UDAP protocols for free. It currently includes 18 wireless data collection providers.
Savi's new software gathers data and reports all records of inspection and sealing activity, including confirmation that seals and containers remain secure as they move from origin to destination. The system provides immediate alerts of any unauthorized tampering or exceptions to defined security processes.
Savi's security solution matches unauthorized events and conditions including unauthorized tampering with electronic seals and other conditions captured by associated sensors. These conditions can relate to changes in temperature, humidity or bio-chemistry. Similarly, routing or process violations are captured by comparing the actual status of a container with its expected handling procedures and environmental tolerances. The system can notify inspectors or law enforcement agents to set aside suspect containers even if the seal remains intact.
The solution can be configured to recognize conditions such as preferred port, preferred carrier and/or conformation of seal and container integrity to qualify containers for fast track inspection processes
Savi says its system can be deployed with existing processes and programs.
"Our integrated supply chain security solution is unique in that it can ensure that all container movements can be accounted for from point of origin to destination and that their status and condition can be continuously monitored," said Blair LaCorte, executive vice-president of Savi Technology.
