Indianapolis-based Bekins Van Lines has agreed to pay $2 million to settle charges that it double-billed military personnel.

According to published reports, government investigators found that bills submitted between March 2000, about the time it began submitting invoices electronically, and May 2001, resulted in overpayments of nearly $1.1 million. More than 300 invoices submitted to the Defense Department contained duplicate and triplicate charges. Some paid charges were re-billed along with new charges.
U.S. Attorney Susan W. Brooks said the overcharges resulted from poor billing practices, not criminal intent. Bekins will refund the overcharges and pay the additional amount, about $900,000, over the next three years.
