Swedish truck maker Scania and Japan's Hino signed a strategic cooperation agreement they hope will help boost both companies' market share.

The alliance will kick off with the introduction of Scania tractors marketed by Hino on the Japanese market. Other possible areas of cooperation include developing lower-emission diesel engines and the potential use of the Hino 7/8-liter engine in some Scania vehicles.
Hino is one of the leading diesel truck and bus makers in Japan, while Scania is the third largest truck and bus manufacturer in Europe.
The cooperation agreement doesn't include capital participation or mutual shareholding.
According to published reports, Japan's Toyota has a 50.1 percent stake in Hino, and Volkswagen of Germany holds 34 percent of Scania.
