A regional truck driver training center has been proposed for Waukesha County in southeastern Wisconsin.

The proposed 40-acre classroom and driving range complex near I-43 has widespread support in the trucking industry, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The state Legislature has already approved an $8 surcharge on traffic citations for truck drivers to pay for it. The college is also soliciting private donations.
The center would replace the Waukesha County Technical College’s program, which must currently borrow parking lots for its training. Officials expect enrollment of more than 200 students a year, more than twice as many as currently attend the college.
The Wisconsin Motor Carriers Assn. says the center could also give more experienced drivers refresher training.
If all goes as planned, construction is expected to begin by next summer.
