Where Interstate 5 and Highways 18 and 161 come together in Federal Way, Wash., is known as the "triangle" - and also as a traffic nightmare. A new study will look at ways to improve the interchange.

The intersection of I-5 and Highway 18 is considered a "high-accident" corridor by the state, while the nearby intersection of South 348th Street and Highway 161 is the busiest in Federal Way.
The state Department of Transportation, King County, Federal Way and Milton have hired Seattle-based consultants Transystem. The consultants will offer short- and long-term fixes, ranging from adding left-hand turn lanes to the Highway 161 intersection to rebuilding the I-5 and Highway 18 interchange.
However, how to pay for any of these suggestions is up in the air. A bill that would have helped pay for highway improvements with higher diesel taxes and truck registration fees died in the Washington Legislature in July.
