Slow down or pay cash. That’s what the New Jersey Turnpike has warned drivers who speed through toll booths equipped with the E-ZPass toll collection system. Speeding in this case means anything over 5 mph.

The New Jersey Turnpike Commission announced that effective Sunday, July 15, registered owners of vehicles exceeding the limit will receive warnings in the mail.
Turnpike Executive Director Ed Gross said that "some drivers fail to slow down to a safe speed when using the E-ZPass lanes -- a fact that creates a potentially dangerous situation in a toll plaza. Action must be taken to curb this practice."
According to the commission, warnings will be issued for the first two infringements. After that, the owner of a vehicle will be penalized. A third incident will result in a 60-day suspension of E-ZPass priviledges. A fourth offense will bring a 180-day -- or six-month -- suspension. A fifth incident will result in final revocation of that vehicle’s E-ZPass account.
The commission’s announcement said that six months without incident will clear an E-ZPass user’s record.
The Turnpike announcement also applies to other New Jersey toll roads, the Garden State Parkway and the Atlantic City Expressway.
