"Clean Diesel power is the technology of the future," states a white paper released this week by the Diesel Technology Forum
to mark its one-year anniversary. The report, "Engineering Clean Air," documents the innovations in technologies that have dramatically reduced, and will continue to reduce, the diesel engine emissions.
The white paper explains the inherent performance advantages of diesel; provides an emissions profile of diesel as the starting point for emissions reduction; documents the major emissions reductions that have been made to date; and describes the technologies that will be employed over the next decade to achieve the virtual elimination of key pollutants.
"The progress the diesel industry has made has been extraordinary -- to meet increasing customer demands for greater fuel efficiency, performance, durability and reliability, while at the same time achieve unparalleled progress in reducing emissions," says Allen Schaeffer, executive director of the Forum. Schaeffer likens the technological innovations in today's diesel engines to "advancements in today's interactive websites, wireless communications and fiber optics."
The release of the white paper coincides with the Diesel Technology Forum's one-year anniversary. In the past 12 months, the Forum has partnered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the California Air Resources Board, regional air quality groups, urban transit districts and others seeking to meet environmental and energy goals through the use of new clean diesel fuel and engine technology and the application of these advances to existing engines.
