A bill in the South Dakota Legislature would extend the hours truckers can stop at the state's rest areas.

HB1013 is up for a vote in the state House, according to the Associated Press. It would extend the hours truckers can stay at interstate rest areas from the current three to eight. Other drivers would still be subject to the three-hour limit.
Bill Nevin, legal counsel in the state Department of Transportation, said the current three-hour restriction is generally not enforced against truckers. The change will conform the law to actual practice.
"Studies have shown that fatigue-related accidents are the most common type of commercial motor vehicle accidents on our interstate highway system," Nevin said, noting that the National Transportation Safety Board recently recommended that states extend or eliminate time limits on truck drivers at rest areas.
